Garrett Metal Detector

Learn the inside scoop on Garrett metal detectors

Garrett Metal Detector

Looking to get started in metal detecting?  A Garrett metal detector would be a great choice.  They're known for quality and performance, and you'll find models ranging from inexpensive to professional-grade.  Here I'll introduce Garrett and several of their product lines.

There's dozens and dozens of different metal detector manufacturers and models out there.  That's no real surprise.  Metal detecting is a popular hobby, and there's even a significant number of professionals.  Over the years several different detector technologies have been developed, including VLF and pulse induction.  Plus there's many “styles” of metal detecting.  In addition to detecting at the beach, which you're probably familiar with, other people enjoy searching historic sites, prospecting for gold, and even looking for meteorites.  Whether you're a complete beginner or seasoned hunter, Garrett detectors are a great choice.

Garrett is one of the best-liked metal detector companies around.  In fact, they really started modern metal detecting back in 1963.  Charles Garrett invented the modern metal detector as used in treasure hunting as well security and military purposes, with patents in oscillator and search-coil technology.    He and his wife started marketing metal detectors in 1964, giving Garrett nearly 50 years of experience in continually adding important innovations.  Garret was also introduced the first detectors to incorporate microprocessors.  Their company is known for it's customer service as well as the advanced capabilities of their detectors.

ACE Garrett Metal Detector Series

The Garrett ACE 150 was introduced back in 2004 and was widely recognized as the most advanced low-cost detector in the world.  By 2005 the 150 and 250 were top sellers.  They're still available, and still great detectors.  The ACE 350 was introduced in 2010.  Unlike some manufactures, Garrett doesn't churn their product line with unimportant variations every year.

These ACE models are general-purpose detectors aiming towards a balance between cost and performance.  They're quite affordable, yet still include many of Garrett's advanced features.  They're easy to use, and a way to get started.  You can spend less, but you're likely to end up with a toy.

GTI Series

The GTI 1500 and GTI 2500 models are especially well suited for beginners.  They're not the least-expensive Garrett detectors, but feature Graphic Target Imaging.  They also include a pin-point mode, as well as a deep-detection capability.

Garrett AT  Metal Detector

The AT Pro is a true All-Terrain design, able to cover dusty soil to wet terrain and everything in-between.  In fact, it's even good down to 10' underwater so it's great for lake, river, and ocean wading.  Introduced in 2010, this model includes a pin-point feature so that it is especially for coin and jewelry hunting, exploring ghost towns and historic sites, and finding hidden caches in buildings.  Plus, of course, beaches.  This model is also known for it's ability to weed-out iron trash.  It takes a little effort to properly use this model, so I don't recommend it for a novice.  A second model, the AT Gold, will be introduced in October of 2011.

Wrap-Up

Other models include a hand-held pin-pointer (Pro Pointer) and an underwater detector (Seahunt Mark II) good to 200 foot depth.  For great performance and advanced features at affordable prices, it's hard to beat a Garrett Metal detector.
